The event will be held Wednesday, March 27, at 9:15 a.m. at the Mississippi e-Center @JSU, 1230 Raymond Road, Jackson. This year’s theme is “Weaving Threads of Resilience and Advocacy.” Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Social workers are advocates for vulnerable populations. Professional social workers counsel individuals and families, and work with communities to improve the quality of life and advocate for legislative changes to promote social justice. In line with the theme of resilience and advocacy, the Social Work Month Celebration will include a panel discussion on a number of issues such as childcare rights, the Affordable Care Act, immigration, human trafficking, prison and homelessness.

The panelists for the event include: Cassandra Welchlin, Mississippi LowIncome Childcare Initiative; Bill Chandler, Mississippi Immigration Rights Alliance; Susie Harvill, Advocates for Freedom; Jarvis Dortch, Mississippi Health Advocacy Program; and Stephanie Magee, a Jackson State University Master of Social Work student. Dr. Mary Sims-Johnson, LCSW, Executive Director of Madison County Citizens Services Agency, will serve as the luncheon speaker.
