To aid your reading experiences, Lemuria Bookstore is providing free bookmarks to customers in observance of the centennial celebration of writer-poet Margaret Walker Alexander, a former longtime literature professor at Jackson State University.
The commemorative bookmarks will be available until supplies are exhausted at Jackson’s Lemuria Bookstore, 4465 I-55 North, which is participating in the city’s yearlong “Jackson Reads” initiative announced recently by Mayor Tony Yarber. The first book selected for reading by the entire city is Walker Alexander’s celebrated novel “Jubilee.”
Also, a limited supply of bookmarks is available at the Margaret Walker Center on the JSU campus. The facility houses archives and a museum dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and dissemination of African-American history and culture.
JSU will sponsor a slate of events that reflect the legacy of Walker Alexander, born July 7, 1915. Her other notable works include the award-winning poem “For My People.”
