HPER selected for training academy sponsored by American Cancer Society and the CDC

Jackson State University’s Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department has been selected to participate in a training academy sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, School Health Branch.

Tamika R. Bradley1JSU’s team was among 16 selected for the School Health Education and Physical Education Advanced Academy, which will be held Feb. 6-8, in Atlanta. The academy’s goal is to prepare its participants to train other school health professionals using CDC training resources.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our team to develop action plans that will promote healthy eating and physical activity,” said Dr. Tamika Bradley, chair of HPER.

The JSU team includes Bradley, Eltorry Ficklin, University Supervisor  (teacher education),  Health & Physical Education, and Narah Oatis, Physical Education Program Coordinator.

 “The selection as an Advanced Academy Team allows us to continue to impact the health status of Mississippians through the highest quality training to both pre-service and current teachers in the areas of health and physical education,”  Bradley said.

All participating teams will be expected to create action plans with activities designed to train state, regional and/or local school health professionals responsible for health education and physical education.
