(JACKSON, Miss.) – More than 1,300 incoming freshmen and transfer students officially began their Jackson State University journey on Aug. 1 as they arrived on campus for the 2026 Fall Move-In Day. Filled with excitement, anticipation and the support of family and friends, students from across the country took their first steps toward a future defined by opportunity, discovery and academic excellence.
“Move-In Day is one of the most meaningful traditions at Jackson State because it marks the beginning of new possibilities for every student who arrives on our campus,” said JSU President Denise Jones Gregory, Ph.D. “Each student brings unique talents, aspirations and the potential to make a lasting impact. We are honored they have chosen Jackson State for this important chapter of their lives, and we are committed to providing the support, opportunities and sense of belonging they need to succeed in the classroom, grow as leaders and make a difference in their communities and professions.”
For many students, Move-In Day represents the beginning of adulthood, where new responsibilities, lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences await. While emotions often run high as families say goodbye, excitement quickly takes over as students begin building the next chapter of their lives at Jackson State.
John Bell, a freshman political science major from Jackson, Mississippi, said attending Jackson State was never a difficult decision. A legacy student, Bell grew up attending JSU football games with his father and participated in the university’s Upward Bound program. He said those experiences made the campus feel like home long before he officially enrolled.
“I feel very much at home and comfortable here at Jackson State,” Bell said. “I feel like I’m supposed to be here. My family has a long history of attending Jackson State, and I have to keep the legacy going. I’m looking forward to making lifelong connections, getting involved in Student Government and becoming a lawyer after graduation.”
The JSU One Stop Shop, in the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center, was one of the first places students and parents visited upon arriving on campus. Designed to simplify the enrollment process, the centralized location connected students with the Offices of Admissions, Housing, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Auxiliary Services and Academic Advising. This allowed them to complete essential tasks in one convenient location before settling into their residence halls.
“We are really excited to help people get a smoother move-in this year because we were able to send out some early communications,” said Jonas Vanderbilt Jr., Ph.D., vice president of Student Affairs and interim vice president of Enrollment Management. “We hosted Zoom sessions with parents to walk them through billing, payment options, scholarship opportunities and the overall process. We’re working diligently to help families complete their move-in much more efficiently.”
Move-In Day is a shared milestone for many families. Parents, siblings and loved ones help students unpack boxes and launch the next phase of their lives.
Freshman Journalism major Grace Manuel, from Terry, Mississippi, is beginning her Jackson State experience alongside her twin brother, Felix. Encouraged by her family to embrace new experiences and independence, Manuel is eager to immerse herself in campus life.
“I already love Jackson State and the campus,” Manuel said. “The move-in process has been smooth, and I’m excited to get involved. My parents want me to become more independent, build new relationships and enjoy the full college experience, and that’s exactly what I’m looking forward to.”
Now that move-in is over and residence halls are filled with energy and excitement, JSU’s newest Tigers will turn their attention to 2026 Welcome Week. Activities are scheduled Aug. 2–8. A full slate of events and activities will introduce the Class of 2030 to the traditions, culture and vibrant campus community that define the Jackson State experience.
