Jackson State University alum Dr. Klarissa Hardy has received the first National Institutes of Health grant in the history of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., university officials report.

In addition, it is the largest research grant in university history.
Hardy, who received her bachelor of science degree in chemistry at JSU in 2006, won the $660,000 grant for breast cancer research.
Her study is aimed at identifying genetic factors such as metabolism that may contribute to a patients’ risk of developing liver toxicity from an anti-cancer drug called lapatinib used for certain types of breast cancer.
Hardy is an assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences. She received her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
