(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Jackson State University baseball team returned safely to campus last night, after the bus they were traveling in caught fire earlier in the day outside of Birmingham, Ala.
No injuries were reported.
JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers, Director of Athletics Dr. Vivian L. Fuller and outgoing JSU National Alumni Association President Terry L. Woodard greeted the players and coaches with a meal in the Student Center.
“We are relieved that everyone is safe. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” Meyers said.
The bus was transporting the team to a game at Savannah State
University scheduled for May 6. The game has been cancelled. Jackson State’s game against Norfolk State University scheduled for May 8 and 9 in Norfolk, Va., has also been cancelled.
“The university will conduct its own exhaustive investigation into this unfortunate incident,” Meyers said.
The University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University have volunteered to assist JSU in any way possible to help the Tigers practice and get ready for the SWAC Tournament scheduled for May 13-18 in New Orleans.
