Jackson State University has been in the forefront of keeping domestic violence in the public eye, and a forum Wednesday aims to ensure students are aware of its impacts and guard against it.
A domestic violence awareness forum titled ‘Survive Celebrate Connect’ will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the JSU Student Center, Ballroom B.
According to Dr. Janet Okhomina, visiting professor in the School of Social Work, the event is in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A balloon release will be held in front of the Student Center preceding the event, at 3:30 p.m.
“We welcome people to attend, including faculty, students and staff,” said Okhomina.

Students have access to counseling and support through the the Latasha Norman Center for Counseling and Disability Services, which provides assistance with building problem-solving skills, managing relationships and becoming more independent and confident.
Spearheading the domestic violence issue regionally and nationally, the center was created in 2007 as a tribute to a JSU student, Latasha Norman, who died as a result of domestic violence.
The center, located in the JSU Student Center on the 2nd floor, provides crisis intervention services; the contact number is 601-979-0374. For more information, see: https://www.jsums.edu/studentlife/latasha-norman-center-for-counseling-and-psychological-services/
The forum is sponsored by the Bachelor of Social Work Program Student Association and co-sponsored by the Criminal Justice and Sociology Department, the Art Department, the Latasha Norman Center, the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, and the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
