JSU music students place in competition

Six Jackson State University students from the Department of Music participated in the Mississippi Music Teachers Association State College Competition on Feb. 23 at Belhaven University in Jackson.

Of the group, two students, Jacob Dodd and Edwin Davis, placed first in the Junior/Senior solo piano division and Freshman/Sophomore vocal division, respectively. Dodd is a senior piano performance major. Davis majors in chemistry and minors in music.

Eddie Crews, senior music education major, received an honorable mention in the Junior/Senior solo piano division. Performance certificates were awarded to senior Carroll McLaughlin and sophomore LaBethani May, both piano majors. Freshman Voice major Tiffany Johnson also received a performance certificate.

These students are from the studios of Phyllis Lewis-Hale, instructor of music and director of the Opera Workshop, and Dr. Karen Laubengayer, professor of music and keyboard coordinator.
