Jackson State University’s College of Public Service, Humana and the LeMont Scott Group recently hosted an event to inform the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus of efforts to enroll residents in the Affordable Care Act’s Health Exchange.

The College of Public Service provided the venue at the Jackson Medical Mall for the Nov. 13 meeting that featured Dr. Pamela Roshell, Region IV District Director of the Department of Health and Human Services. She and her staff led discussions about efforts to enroll Mississippians in the exchange, explaining the federal laws that support the Affordable Care Act and its implementation.

College of Public Service Dean Dr. Ricardo Brown said the Affordable Care Act has the potential to change the landscape of health care coverage options in Mississippi. He said the college can play a role in the implementation.

“The College of Public Service looks forward to working with Humana and the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus to train selected faculty and students as navigators to assist our citizens in enrolling in the federally mandated Health Exchange,” Brown said.

Also in attendance were Humana Mississippi Sales Director Stacey Carter and Shawn Nason, a Humana consultant. Humana is participating in dialogue about the health care options and investing time and resources to connect citizens to information through the “Cover Mississippi Tour,” which begins in December.

The event was coordinated by Sen. Kenneth W. Jones, chairman of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus. Other participants were Ben Minnifield and Dr. Tanya Scott of the LeMont Scott Group.
