The Mississippi Learning Institute at Jackson State University is collaborating with the Childhood Directors Network to provide sessions during the 5th annual Mississippi Early Childhood Alliance Conference on developing quality educational skills and classroom strategies.
The theme of the conference is “Connecting the Dots in the Classroom” and will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 21 on the third floor of the JSU Student Center.
Featured speaker will be Dr. Carey M. Wright, who is the state superintendent of education for Mississippi. Most recently, Wright affirmed her commitment to Mississippi’s College- and Career-Readiness Standards for K-12, which push for competencies in English language arts and mathematics.
Supporters say its adoption provides a consistent, clear understanding of what students should learn, so teachers and parents can assist them. However, detractors, pushing for a repeal of the blueprint, say standards from other states provide a much better model for student success.
Before relocating to Mississippi, Wright formerly served as chief academic officer for the District of Columbia Public Schools. She has been recognized as an outstanding educator by the National Center for Culturally Responsive Systems and was nominated twice for The Washington Post Outstanding Principal Award.
Early registration for the conference costs $20 ($15 with a student ID). On-site registration is cash only for $25. For more information, visit www.mlims.org. To print a registration form, visit https://www.jsums.edu/mli/files/2014/12/MECA-Reg-Form-2015A-1.pdf.
