The annual Jackson Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will honor the birthday of the civil rights leader on Monday.
More than 450 people are expected to attend 6:30 p.m. awards banquet at the JSU Ballroom in the Student Center, according to Hinds County Judge Larita Cooper-Stokes, who hosts the event with her husband, Hinds County Supervisor Kenneth I. Stokes.
While many will come for the free dinner, it’s “first come, first served,” Cooper-Stokes said. “Some people just want to come and see the program.”
The celebration has been held at JSU every year, she said, but this is the first time it has been held in the ballroom.
General parking will be in the College of Business, College of Liberal Arts, Walter Payton Center and T.B. Ellis lots, according to JSU Police Officer Janet Samuel. Reserved parking is in the lot directly behind the Student Center, she said.
Earlier in the day, a wreath-laying is planned for 10 a.m. at Medgar Evers Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, as well as a birthday bash at noon at Jackson City Hall, 219 S. President St.
