The Mississippi Food Policy Council, a nonprofit that helps set food policy in the state, held its quarterly meeting at the Mississippi eCenter @JSU on Friday.
The group broke into committees and discussed various aspects of Mississippi’s food system, including food safety (and new rules for farmers regarding food handling), food access (and how to alleviate “food deserts,” or places in the state where there is no access to fresh fruit and vegetables), and other issues.
Established in 2011, the council provides a forum for diverse stakeholders from farming to food processing to retailers to address common concerns regarding food policy including food systems, food security, farm policy, food regulations, health, and nutrition.
The FPC is chaired by Dr. DeMarc Hickson, director and chief operating office of My Brother’s Keeper Inc., a non-partisan, non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to the elimination of health disparities and achievement of health equity among vulnerable, underserved and overlooked populations
