MJCPC promotes Super Bowl road safety initiative in Vicksburg Jan. 24

(VICKSBURG, Miss.) – The Super Bowl is one of America’s most highly anticipated sports events as friends and family gather in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate.

To promote safety during the Super Bowl weekend, the Mississippi Delta Region Alcohol Countermeasures/Impaired Driving Prevention Initiative and the Vicksburg Police Department, in partnership with El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant, will unveil the Coaster Campaign on Jan. 24, at 10 a.m., at El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant, 110 Cypress Centre Blvd., Vicksburg.

This initiative is implemented by Jackson State University’s Metro Jackson Community Prevention Coalition (MJCPC).

The initiative will inform and educate the community about the dangers of driving while impaired. Cup coasters with the slogan, “DRIVE SOBER, OR GET PULLED OVER,” provided by Troop D Law Enforcement Liaison (LEL), Chris McDonald and the Mississippi Department of Public Safety will be utilized. El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant is supporting MJCPC’s efforts by using the coasters when serving alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages to their customers leading up to and throughout the Super Bowl weekend.

“It is our hope that exposure to the prevention message, “DRIVE SOBER, OR GET PULLED OVER,” will encourage would-be violators to choose their MVP — a sober designated driver — before their Super Bowl celebration begins,” said Velesha P. Williams, director of the MJCPC.

Williams said law enforcement will show zero tolerance for drunk drivers on the road. State and local law enforcement will be watching for drunk drivers to keep the roads safe during Super Bowl celebrations with aggressive DRIVE SOBER, OR GET PULLED OVER enforcement.
