Dr. Safiya Omari, who previously served as director for the Center for University Scholars and Research Compliance Officer, has been appointed associate vice president for Research/Research Development at Jackson State University.

“I am deeply honored to have been afforded the opportunity to work in the Division of Research and Federal Relations as associate vice president for Research/Research Development as we move the strategic research agenda of the University forward,” Omari said.

Dr. Loretta A. Moore, vice president for Research and Federal Relations, said, “Dr. Omari served the division well this past academic year. Under her leadership, the center offered a record number of faculty development workshops and expanded the content of those workshops to include faculty at every career stage. She also successfully facilitated the third year of the Academy for Research and Scholarly Engagement, which supported 23 faculty scholars in their efforts to garner external funding,” said Moore. “We value her experience and vision and look forward to working with her in this important position.”

As part of her role within the Division of Research and Federal Relations, Omari will work to increase research funding at JSU.

Omari served as director of the Southern Institute for Mental Health Advocacy, Research and Training from 2005 to 2013, and has garnered more than $3 million in external funding. She holds the rank of tenured associate professor of Social Work and Health Sciences in the College of Public Service.
