Jackson State University President Carolyn W. Meyers welcomed more than 30 business and community leaders to JSU’s Madison location Tuesday for Leadership Madison County’s Education Day.
The civic group met for breakfast at JSU Madison before starting a day of touring a number of educational sites in Madison County. Starting with JSU’s Madison location, the group visited a selection of schools ranging from kindergarten through higher education institutions. Superintendent of Madison County Schools Dr. Ronnie McGehee joined the group for the event.
JSU’s new site in Madison, conveniently located off I-55 at Galleria Parkway, is growing rapidly. Its inaugural summer 2012 session attracted 198 undergraduate and graduate students from all five JSU colleges. Designed to appeal to nontraditional students who are already working, in job transition, or caring for families, the JSU site is part of the university’s enrollment management plan. The fall class includes more than 400 students.
Good move Madam President! Community engagement is the key to forward unhindered forward movement. People are leery about that which they are not familiar regardless of its merits. JSU administrators should move about the pockets of neighborhoods throughout Jackson, the metro area, Mississippi and selected spots around the nation telling our story, selling our vision, and engaging comrades. Our National Alumni Association is, or ought to be, ready to work as a partner in such ventures. The late President Emeritus B. Baldwin Dansby and I used to chat about these days on his 1026 West Pearl Street porch many-a-day. He could see all of this (I couldn’t) and say, “Brother Lackey, when Jackson College’s ship comes in, everything and everybody in and around Jackson will be covered by blue and white.” President Meyers, continue to spray paint!
