Dear Jackson State University Family,
I would like to take the time to highlight the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who today made history as the first African American woman to become a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in the 230-year history of the bench. Justice Brown replaces Justice Stephen Breyer, the very judge that she clerked for, which is a fitting passing of the baton. I look forward to her swearing in ceremony later this summer.
As a proud “girl dad,” I couldn’t be more thrilled to have the opportunity to explain to my two young daughters what this historic moment means to the African American community. Yet another glass ceiling has been permanently shattered on a national level. Representation does matter. With this appointment to the Supreme Court Justice Brown paves the way for little Black girls and young women across the country, including those pursuing their education right here at Jackson State University. Seventy percent of our student body is comprised of women – all bright and ambitious. They are pursuing degrees in business, criminal justice, engineering and education. Many will continue on to graduate school to study medicine, dentistry and law. This historic moment further affirms that they can be successful in all arenas; from the White House to the Supreme Court and beyond. There is space for them at the table.
I hope all our students, particularly our young ladies, will view this moment as the fulfillment of what is possible with the transformative power of change, education, mentorship and a belief in one’s self. Today’s confirmation signifies that antiquated ideologies can be dethroned, and a diverse judiciary system can truly proliferate.
Best regards,
Thomas K. Hudson
President
