WHEMN conference to focus on preparing women for leadership in higher education

Themed “Achieving Leadership Success Through Social Networking,” the Women in Higher Education Mississippi Network conference will be Feb. 18-19 in the downtown Jackson Convention Complex. The event is hosted by Jackson State University.

“We encourage women who are interested in pursuing leadership positions in higher education to attend the conference. It is a great opportunity to network with other women leaders and to learn how to achieve leadership success through building a strong social network,” said Dr. Loretta A. Moore, vice president for Research and Federal Relations at JSU and coordinator for the 2016-2017 WHEMN.

Featured speakers include: State Treasurer Lynn Fitch, State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier, Attorney Constance Slaughter Harvey, WLBT anchor Maggie Wade, and Meredith Creekmore, who is with the C Spire Foundation. Several Mississippi college and university presidents, vice presidents and other institutional leaders also will participate.

Topics include: Analyzing Your Social Network – Building Effective Collaborations and Partnerships; Enhancing the Strength of Your Communications; Balancing Social and Family Structures; Social Media and Social Networking Services – Ladies You Must Protect Yourself; Women’s Roles and Responsibilities in Social Equity and Social Justice; and Increasing Your Social Capital Through Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Philanthropy.

WHEMN is part of the American Council on Education (ACE) Women’s Network, which was established in 1977 as a state-based system of interlocking networks supported by campus presidents and designed to identify and support women’s leadership development in each state. Founded in 1918, ACE represents the interests of more than 1,600 campus executives as well as 200 leaders of higher education-related associations and organizations.

Together, ACE member institutions serve 80 percent of today’s college students. In its role as the major coordinating body for all the nation’s higher education institutions, ACE provides leadership on key higher education issues and influences public policy through advocacy, research and program initiatives.
