WJSU, JSU Cares present ‘The Beauty of Cancer’ at Mississippi Museum of Art

All of us have been touched by cancer in some form, and all of us can play a vital role in defeating this potentially deadly disease.

Beauty of Cancer Logo 1WJSU and JSU Cares presents The Beauty of Cancer, an exhibition of photography featuring more than 20 breast cancer survivors in various stages of their journey. The exhibition opens Thursday, Oct. 12th and will end Oct. 29th. The hauntingly beautiful photos tell the stories of these women in ways that words alone never could.

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health, more than 400 women die each year from breast cancer in Mississippi, and this year alone, 2,050 women will be diagnosed with the disease. And yet, Mississippi is one of 10 states with the lowest breast cancer-screening rate for older women, and more than one-quarter of Mississippi’s women do not receive regular screenings.

Cancer is an ugly disease, but the beauty of cancer is that it’s curable when detected early. Through images of survivors bravely displaying their mental and physical scars, this exhibition aims to reduce the incidence of breast cancer deaths by motivating women to perform monthly breast self-exams and schedule yearly mammograms at the appropriate age.

The Beauty of Cancer is an installment of The Community Exhibition Series, The Art in Us All, which was created to deepen the relationship between The Mississippi Museum of Art and its visitors and cultivate creativity in the community for people of all ages and backgrounds. The exhibition series invites nonprofit organizations in Mississippi to showcase art created by their constituents.

Sponsored by the Everybody Can Help Somebody Foundation | This exhibition is free and open to the public.
