Three Jackson State University students have won awards during the 2013 Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition sponsored by the JSU Department of Art.
The students’ artwork will be among 188 pieces currently on display at the Arts Center of Mississippi. 
Lanis Leggett’s “Love for the Green” won Best of Time Based Media; Mack Sullivan’s “Untitled” won Best of Mixed Media and DeShaunte Walker received the Award of Excellence in clay arts for “Headstrong.”
“It’s the first time I’m aware of that Jackson State students have won three awards for one collegiate competition. We do have incredible talent here in our department. We have great faculty who know how to bring that raw talent out,” said Charles Carraway, chair of the Department of Art.
The MCAC is a unique juried exhibition featuring the work of artists enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the state of Mississippi.
The competition was created and hosted by the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson from 1950 through 1992. Since 1992, the competition has been hosted on a rotating basis among art museums, colleges and universities across Mississippi.
Sarah Marshall, an associate professor of art at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, juried this year’s competition. There were 1,052 entries from 10 schools. Marshall chose the 188 pieces for inclusion in the exhibition, which will be on display through Feb. 24.
The arts center is located at 201 E. Pascagoula St. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The hours on Saturday are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The institutions participating in this year’s competition were Delta State University, Millsaps College, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi Valley State University, University of Mississippi, University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University.
