A fever, sore throat, coughing, shortness of breath, fatigue and a loss of taste or smell; sound familiar? Of course, it does. These are the common symptoms of the virus known as Covid-19.
For more than a year, medical professionals have advised people to protect themselves and others from getting the deadly virus with tips such as wearing a mask, staying at least six feet apart, avoiding crowds, and washing their hands.
Recently, the COVID-19 vaccine was developed, promising millions of people relief. Continuing to keep the campus community safe, Jackson State University partnered with Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center to distribute the Moderna vaccine to faculty, staff and students on Friday, March 19.
At least 275 people showed up to receive their first dose, and here’s why:
Shameka Reed, JSU Global
I am ready to travel and I want to travel safely.
Brian Mitchell, Business Administration major/Football Player
Being on the football team, if you get Covid-19, you have to sit out one or two weeks, and with this being a short season, I’m not willing to take that chance.
Daisia Davis, Miss JSU
To save others around us so we can go ahead and speed up this process. I just want to do my part, that I could, and go ahead and get vaccinated so I can have fun this summer.
Laila Woodford, Biology-Pre-medicine major
My mom’s cousin passed from Covid-19, and we were all so shocked by the effects that it took on him and we are very nervous about the effects that it could have for the rest of our family, so we really are excited that we have this opportunity to get the Covid shot.
Shameka Reed, JSU Global
I want to be able to travel, be closer to family, and like I said, just some of the benefits of it like if you and I have both been vaccinated, we can communicate without having a mask on, and if I come in contact with someone that is Covid positive and I don’t have any symptoms, then I don’t have to wear a mask.
People who have been fully vaccinated can return to doing the things they loved — traveling, eating in restaurants, and visiting family and friends. However, medical officials still advise everyone to continue practicing social distancing, wearing a mask, and avoiding huge crowds.
JSU partnered with Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center to administer a second round of vaccines on Tuesday, March 30, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center.
