‘Big Data’ focus of JSU’s 35th Annual Mathematics and Engineering Fair on Friday

The Department of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences will hold the 35th Annual Mathematics and Engineering Fair on Friday, April 17, at the Just Science Hall, room 115.

Hosted by the College of Science, Technology and Engineering, the theme for this year’s Fair is Making Sense of Big Data, according to Angela Getter, development officer, Division of Institutional Advancement, CSET.

Individual and team competitions allow high school students to demonstrate their understanding of mathematical concepts. Student events include the Mathematics Bowl, Mathematics Essay, and Bridge Design and Engineering competitions.

This year’s Fair also features Undergraduate Research Presentations from six Jackson State undergraduate students. Teachers will attend a Mathematics Seminar entitled Exploding Dots where they will explore and investigate a method for counting and adding in base-n.

Sponsors include the National Science Foundation, McGraw Hill Education, Voya Financial, Person Higher Education, the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau and Jackson State University Bookstore.
