(Jackson, MS) – Dr. Marcus A. Chanay, vice president of the Division of Student Life at Jackson State University, has been named president-elect of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP).
Chanay currently serves as NASAP’s conference chairperson. He will assume the presidency in 2014. NASAP was founded in 1954, and is dedicated to promoting excellence in the area of student affairs. With a varied membership spanning across academic, administrative, corporate, and student affairs boundaries, the organization offers a variety of resources and experiences to colleges and universities throughout the country.
Following his installation as president-elect, Chanay reaffirmed his commitment to the goals and ideals of NASAP.
“NASAP fosters team building and networking, and through collaboration and professional development, we explore answers to the challenges we all face as student affairs professionals,” Chanay said. “Sharing our successes and failures help us to become better at what we are charged with doing: helping our students become productive and successful citizens.”
Recently, Chanay hosted the group’s 59th annual conference at the Jackson Marriott, with keynote speakers and workshops centered on the theme, “Transforming the Trends and Challenges of Higher Education through Student Engagement, Learning and Success.” As chair, he ensured that the conference provided a forum for professional growth and development for all who are involved in or work with students in the student affairs profession. He will also host the 2014 conference in Savannah, Ga.
As Jackson State’s vice president for Student Life, Chanay is responsible for fostering an atmosphere conducive to the pursuit of knowledge, basic rights and responsibilities by providing disciplinary standards that are in the best interest of the university. This Division provides programs and services that support the growth of JSU students, enhance their intellectual, social, cultural and physical development, and complement their academic excellence by providing opportunities for students to exhibit leadership, experience education, explore interests beyond the classroom and serve their community.
