Each year, April is reserved by the U.S. government as National Financial Literacy Month. As a part of this initiative, the College of Business partners with Regions Bank to assist students with their understanding of financial concepts and the importance of healthy fiscal behavior.

The Regions Executive Lecture Series attracted dozens of students from the area of Business inquiring about such issues as securing business loans, magnetic strip cards, employment opportunities, monitoring credit scores and loan repayment plans.

The panel included Robert E. Leard IV, market executive and commercial banking leader; Candace L. Simmons, regional marketing director; and Christopher A. Wallace, vice president and Mississippi SBA lending specialist.

Several of the students also inquired about ways to stand out from other applicants when pursuing a job.

Leard, said, “The best way to differentiate yourself from others is to use your communication skills. Being able to show that you are articulate and can think on your feet is critical to being successful in business.”

Simmons, “Dress for the job you want and not the job that you have, appearance matters a lot.”

Many of the students were very grateful after talking with Regions professionals. The students said they felt like the exposure gave them a better feel as to what type of workers companies look for in a future employee.

Senior business administration major Christian Williams said, “ The most important lesson that I took from the panel discussion was the importance of professionalism. Now I know that perception plays a major role in the workplace.”

After the panel discussion, business students who participated in the Quinnipiac G.A.M.E. VIII forum for global asset management education presented a special appreciation powerpoint to Regions for sponsoring their participation.

The student participants were:

  • Miyah Little, management major
  • Shuryan Macon, finance major
  • Elizabeth Richardson, finance major
  • Erykah Savery, finance major
  • Christian Williams, finance major

As a partner of JSU, Regions also carried its message of financial literacy to the campus “hot spot” in conjunction with other student-oriented events occurring on the plaza.

Interim dean for the College of Business, Dr. Sheila Porterfield says “Regions Day on the plaza is held on the campus  “hot spot” because we want to expose as many student as possible to the importance of developing healthy financial habits.”
