Gallery1 at Jackson State University presented a solo exhibition of renowned painter, poet and art impresario Daniel “Danny” Simmons, Jr.
Simmons is a neo-African abstract expressionist painter and the brother of hip hop mogul Russell Simmons and rapper Joseph Simmons, known as “Rev. Run” of Run-D.M.C. fame. “I Dreamed My People Were Calling But I Couldn’t find My Way Home” will showcase a series of his original paintings and digital artwork created over the course of eight years. Pieces from Simmons’ personal collection of Central and West African art will also be on display.
In 2004, Simmons published “Three Days As The Crow Flies,” a fictional account of the 1980s New York art scene. He has also written a book of artwork and poetry.
The exhibit had its opening reception on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at the gallery. Simmons was available to sign two of his books with drinks and hors d’oeuvres provided by Chef Luis Bruno from Adobo. On Friday, Feb. 7 at noon, guests had the opportunity to hear from and engage with Simmons in a one-on-one dialogue during “Conversations with the Artist and Poetry Reading.” Both events are free to public.
