E-Week @ JSU celebrates engineers, STEM starting Feb. 23

The Jackson State University College of Science, Engineering and Technology is gearing up for a week of activities to celebrate engineers — or E-Week — this month.

“National Engineers Week (E-Week), which celebrates professionals in all fields of engineering, will be held Feb. 23-27,” said Dr. Farshad Amini, professor and chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

“It is the only event of its kind — to bring public attention to the work and contributions of our nation’s engineers,” said Amini, who is co-chair of the event with Dr. Mahmoud A. Manzoul, professor and chair of the Department of Computer Engineering.

The week of activities to be held at the Engineering Building should be of interest to all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students, Amini said.

E-Week @ JSU Schedule:

Monday, Feb. 23:

— CSET/LSMAMP Symposium, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Lockheed Martin Recruitment and Career Development Workshop, 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Feb. 24:

— Entergy Day (all STEM and business majors), 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 25:

— Society of Women Engineers host SWE tea (all female STEM majors invited), 3 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 27:

— Nissan Day, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Events will kick off Monday, Feb. 23, with a CSET/ Louis Stokes Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation (LSMAMP) Symposium.

The LSMAMP program is designed to prepare undergraduate underrepresented minority students who major in STEM studies to be effective and proficient in their fields, and to be prepared for graduate school.

“The LSMAMP symposium is a forum where eight institutions of higher learning in Mississippi — including Jackson State University — bring students and faculty members together to showcase their research,” said Dr. Ashton T. Hamme, professor of chemistry and biochemistry.

“This symposium will be an excellent opportunity for students to network and to present their research results to the public. The College of Science, Engineering and Technology is pleased to host this scientific conference, which has been held annually at JSU since 2004,” he said.

Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National E-Week is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers.
