JACKSON, Miss. – Earning the prestigious opportunity to conduct meticulous research under the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award, Jackson State University Full Professor Ali Abu-El Humos, Ph.D. looks forward to bridging the gap between academic and research opportunities for JSU students and study abroad programs. Humos participated in a two-year long period of planning and preparation for his submission.
“We laud the research by Dr. Abu-El Humos. Remote sensing is one of the strategic directions for the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology. His remarkable career at Jackson State will bode well for him as he engages with faculty and students in border security. We look forward to a showcase of his findings,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Alisa Mosley, Ph.D.
Originally born and raised in Jordan, he is ecstatic to return to his country to conduct research at his alma mater.
“I was born and raised in Jordan and I got my bachelor’s degree in engineering from the University of Jordan, so this award is actually giving back for me to the country where I was born and raised while also sharing my research and teaching experience,” said Humos.
Over the course of 10 months, Humos will work collaboratively with faculty and students from the University of Jordan on research relating to wireless communication and network remote sensing. With the University of Jordan touting a pristine background in the area of computer science specifically in border security, Humos sees this as an opportunity for both institutions to engage in a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge to develop curriculum, bridge the academic research gaps and diversify the student body.
“Besides sharing the research experience, I will be able to recruit graduate students from the University of Jordan to come work with us,” he said.
He looks forward to adding Jordan to the list of countries available for JSU students interested in pursuing study abroad research programs. Now entering his 17th year of teaching at JSU, Humos continues to gleam at the invaluable experience both conducting research and engaging with inquiring students has provided him.
“I would like to thank my students, and my colleagues at Jackson State. Without their help none of this would be possible. As students, faculty members, and staff, we know there are a lot of opportunities that we can engage in at Jackson State, it’s a great institution and great place to work at and I’m looking forward to what comes next for many years to come.”
