Students from across the state will participate in the Jackson State University College Boot Camp Experience June 15-29 on JSU’s main campus.
The event encourages 11th grade students to take advantage of enrollment opportunities and financial resources in preparation for higher education. The boot camp is funded through a GEAR UP grant from the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. JSU matched a $75,000 IHL grant to provide $150,000 in total funding. Seventy-five students will participate.
Loria Brown-Gordon, Ph.D., interim associate dean at the W.E.B. DuBois Honors College, said the students will be introduced to the university’s entrance application and academic advising processes. They’ll also receive information about campus support systems.
“Students will learn to identify and articulate their values, gain knowledge of learning styles, to use time and stress management techniques and how to listen effectively and take efficient notes,” Brown-Gordon said. “Study skills and test taking modules will teach students new approaches to mastering subject matter.”
Charity Hicks, a rising senior at Gautier High School, said she’s excited about participating in the camp.
“I believe I will be able to explore new things and get a better understanding of what I want to do in college. I think this can be a good experience to help me do this,” Hicks said. “I love music and I love English and I’m hoping when I finish this camp I’ll know how to merge the two for a career.”
