Four-time Grammy-nominated R&B superstar KEM will headline the Jackson State University Development Foundation (JSUDF) annual 1877 Signature Event at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at the Jackson Convention Center in downtown Jackson.

The fundraising extravaganza is destined to be a fun affair for alumni, donors, and friends of JSU as they mingle with the who’s who of the Jackson entertainment scene.

Aligned with the university’s five-year strategic plan, the Foundation created the signature event to strengthen existing financial relationships with JSU donors and establish new networking opportunities to enhance the university’s academic and social experience.

“It is with great excitement that the JSUDF Board of Directors is hosting its second 1877 Signature Event. We are elated to create a FUNraising event that provides scholarship dollars and university support,” said Guyna “Gee” Johnson, chair of the JSUDF.

KEM recently released his memoir “Share My Life: A Journey of Love, Faith and Redemption,” which discusses his journey from homelessness to the main stage. The artist will be available to sign his book for fans after his performance.

Event hosts are noted comedians and Mississippi natives Rita Brent and Merc B. In addition to KEM, there will be powerhouse performances by the Unfazed Show from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and violinist John Uzodinma. Guests will also party the night away to the sounds of DJs Kujho, Nasty Sho, George Chuck, and Mr. Adams.

Tantalizing cuisine will be served by the Taste of Jackson, featuring the city’s best chefs, and include an exclusive 1877 Signature Cocktail sponsored by Cathead Vodka. There will also be a Bourbon Tasting Lounge.

Fundraising chair, the late Derek Polk, led planning efforts for the 1877 Signature Event and is the mastermind behind the vision, which is designed to provide guests with a magnificent evening while giving them an experience that shows appreciation for their donations, which are directly linked to student scholarships and the long-term sustainability of Jackson State University, Johnson explained.

General admission is $75 and can be purchased here.
