Dr. Berneece Herbert, associate professor and chair for the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is a candidate for the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning new Vice President/President-Elect position.
“I was completely surprised but very honored to be selected as a candidate for this position.”
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) is a consortium of more than 100 university planning programs in addition to a large number of scholars including individual faculty, retired faculty, and student members.
“I have been involved in ACSP for a number of years,” says Herbert. “In 2017, I was selected as a featured faculty and I now serve as co-chair for the Community Health & Food Security conference tract.”
If elected, she will serve the remainder of this current term, 2019-2021 and automatically advance to President for 2021-2023.
“If selected, I would use my role to further boost critical importance of Urban & Regional Planning, a strategic process to assess and devise policies, programs and plans to maintain or restore a city/region’s health focusing on systems such as housing, transportation, food, the economy,” says Herbert. “In doing so, this would enhance the visibility of our Planning programs offered at the Department of Urban & Regional Planning (DURP) at JSU, particularly as DURP offers the only accredited Planning program in the state of Mississippi.”
The position of VP/President-Elect involves:
- Collaborating with the Executive Board and membership to advance the mission through promoting excellence in planning, education and research; and committing to inclusive engagement to enable more healthy, sustainable and socially just communities.
Herbert is a results-oriented Urban Planning professional with over 25 years of practice, academic and research experience in community economic development, strategic planning and management, program assessment and public-sector investment planning and policy formulation.
