Jackson State University graduate chemistry students were awarded at the 77th annual meeting of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences at the University of Southern Mississippi on Feb. 21-23.
Mahabubur Rhaman, oral presentation 1st place recipient, presented Amine-based Compounds for Anion Recognition and Sensing in Water. Rhaman is currently a doctoral student under the supervision of Dr. Md. Alamgir Hossain, associate professor of chemistry with research support by the National Science Foundation’s CAREER program.
Martha Johnson, poster presentation 1st place recipient, presented Effects of Morphological Differences on Toxicity Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles to Brine Shrimp (Artemia salina) Larvae. Johnson is currently a M.S. student under the supervision of Dr. Zikri Arslan, associate professor of chemistry with research support by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) RCMI-Center for Environmental Health (CEH) and National Science Foundation’s LSMAMP Program.
Bhanu Priya Viraka Nellore received a 2nd place award in her poster presentation of Selective Detection and Photothermal Therapy of Cancer Cells with Iron Core Gold Shell Nanoparticles. Nellore is currently a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Dr. Ashton Hamme, professor of chemistry and biochemistry with research support by the National Science Foundation’s RISE Program.
The mission of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences is to further the work of scientists, to facilitate cooperation, to improve the effectiveness of science in the promotion of human welfare, and to increase public understanding and appreciation of the importance and promise of the methods of science in human progress.
