When it comes to attendance in the NCAA Division 1 AA – Football Championship Series (FCS), the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) reigns supreme, with a hefty contribution from Jackson State University.
As a league in 2014, the SWAC outnumbered the Missouri Valley Conference by nearly 2,000 in attendance, despite playing 10 fewer total games in its league. The overall average for attendance for SWAC games in 2014 was 12,781 fans at each of its 57 home football contests.
Five SWAC schools finished in the Top 30 with JSU placing 12th with an average of 14,276. Alabama State was 13th and Alcorn 15th. Southern University averaged 15,416 to place 8th.
The SWAC and Missouri Valley Conference were the only two Division 1 AA leagues with an average of more than 10,000 fans per game. The Big Sky Conference finished third with an average of 9,508.
SWAC has been the FCS leader in attendance 36 of the past 37 years.
