(Jackson, Miss.) — Jackie Slater, a Jackson State University football star, former NFL offensive tackle and a Jackson, Miss., sports legend, was honored in his hometown community Dec. 19 as part of a special program called “Hometown Hall of Famers™ presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate.”Slater was recognized by representatives of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (PFHOF), Allstate Insurance Company and the community during a special ceremony at Wingfield High School.
During the event, JSU Director of Athletics Vivian L. Fuller presented Slater with a framed replica of his college jersey.
Slater, a standout offensive lineman for JSU, was the Los Angeles Rams’ third round pick in the 1976 NFL Draft. He went on to become the mainstay of the Rams’ offensive line for the next 20 seasons, which at the time was an NFL record for most sea
sons with the same team.
A powerful drive blocker known for his work ethic and leadership skills, Slater blocked for seven different 1,000-yard rushers including fellow Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson. He made 18 playoff game appearances, including in Super Bowl XIV, and his 259 regular-season games played were the most ever by an offensive lineman when he retired.
Slater was a five-time first-or second-team All-Pro selection and seven-time first- or second-team All-NFC choice. He was named to seven Pro Bowls and the St. Louis Rams have retired his No. 78 jersey. Slater was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
Brock Richards of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enterprises will present him with the historic plaque, which will remain on permanent display at Wingfield High School.
