Jackson State University freshman A’Kendra Lewis recently won the Miss Clinton pageant and will compete for the Miss Mississippi crown.

Lewis, a 19-year-old majoring in entrepreneurship, sang “I Give Myself Away,” during the talent competition of the pageant held at Clinton Junior High School. Lewis said the pageant was sponsored by the Miss America Organization.

She’ll compete in the Miss Mississippi pageant scheduled for July 11-13 in Vicksburg.

“I am very excited. I look forward to meeting the other young women who will represent their hometowns. I’m also looking forward to working with the Miss America Organization. I love forming new friendships, but I’m also very competitive,” Lewis said.

Lewis’ platform is CHARMS, which stands for class, honor, admirable, respect, manners and success.

“When I speak to younger groups, that’s the message I deliver. We, as a society, have fallen into too many comfort zones. I feel we’ve neglected these six characteristics that truly define a person. I want to constantly remind younger people to embrace these character traits and who God made them to be.”

Lewis is the daughter of Kenny and Vickie Lewis. Kenny Lewis works for the Hinds County District Attorney’s office. Vickie Lewis is an entrepreneur who owns a daycare in Clinton. Vickie Lewis is also a sign language  interpreter who freelances with JSU.

A’Kendra Lewis received a full scholarship from JSU as a track and field athlete.

“I will be representing my hometown in the competition,  but I also feel I’ll be representing Jackson State, as well.”
