Jackson State University recently hosted more than 200 military students from local JROTC programs, Hinds Community College and local reserve units, showing off the services that JSU offers.
According to Tim Abram, director of the JSU Veterans and Military Center, “These prospective students were given a thorough overview of the Jackson State University campus that included academic, career services, financial and support service opportunities.”
“Overall, this event was a success, our recruitment team and students definitely accomplished our goals of ensuring a smooth transition to higher education by providing an overwhelming amount of information to those in attendance,” said Abram.
They were celebrating JSU Military Recruitment Day on April 11 in the Rose E. McCoy Auditorium where students connected with current JSU students and campus administrators. The students were provided with a complimentary buffet lunch provided by the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.
Information on the JSU Veterans and Military Center was provided and included G.I. Bill benefits, scholarship opportunities for veterans, service-members and military dependents. The JSU Air Force and Army ROTC departments also presented information about admissions to the ROTC programs that included requirements, scholarships and the benefits of becoming an Air Force and Army officer.
There were several JSU student leaders present to inspire and answer questions about college life, including current Miss JSU Anissa Butler and 2015-2016 Miss JSU-elect Charence Higgins. Higgins performed two inspirational songs that captivated the audience.
Cadets from JSU’s Air Force and Army ROTC and JSU military students were present to answer questions and concerns about ROTC and military life.
Colonel Paul Willis, Jackson Public Schools Commander of JROTC stated, “I’d like to sincerely thank JSU for coordinating and hosting the visit of our cadets to the campus. I could clearly see that everyone involved went above and beyond to ensure our cadets felt welcome and were provided with excellent information. As you know these types of experiences and exposure are so important to the overall development of our high school students and it prepares them to make informed decisions about their future.”
Jackson State consistently ranks as one of the most military friendly schools in the nation. In February, Military Advanced Education magazine awarded JSU designation as a Top Military-Friendly School in its 2015 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities.
In the fall, JSU was named a 2015 “Military Friendly” school by Victory Media.
