JSU military and veterans services program honored by magazine

Military Advanced Education magazine has awarded Jackson State University designation as a Top Military-Friendly School in its 2015 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities.

To honor veterans and military personnel on campus, the Center is holding a VA Outreach Day from 9-11:00 a.m. Tuesday on the first floor of Jacob Reddix Hall, according to Center Director Tim Abram.

This marks the second magazine in less than a year to laud the efforts of JSU’s veterans and military outreach program.

In the fall, JSU was named a 2015 “Military Friendly” school by Victory Media.

Strict criteria were used to judge finalists for the MAE award and inclusion in the Guide, said Kelly Fodel, MAE’s editor.

“We believe the Guide serves as an invaluable tool for both education services officers and transition officers when advising service members about their educational opportunities,” Fodel said.

JSU opened the Veterans and Military Center in August, 2012, to provide enhanced support services for student veterans, service members and dependents. The Center’s outreach programs provide student support services focused on the special needs and requirements of today’s military student, Abram said.

The Center has three team members: Abram, Kimberly Jones-Ward and Ashlei Ainsworth.

“Our immediate support team includes, the Division of Student Affairs, JSU Financial Services, JSU Air Force Detachment, JSU Army ROTC Battalion, Jackson Regional VA office, the VA medical center & local military units,” said Abram.  “This dedicated team works well together by ensuring that trust, commitment, accountability and results are all present and accounted for.  These ingredients assure us that the students we serve receive the best services available.
