Jackson State University mourns the loss of associate English professor Dr. Jean Chamberlain, who died Wednesday, March 11, after a lengthy illness.

Previously, Chamberlain served as chair of the Department of English. Also, she had been an instructor of honors composition; world literature; grammar and composition; literary criticism; and English methods.

Offering reflections and sorrow, JSU President Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers, said, “It is with great sadness that I offer sincere condolences to the family, friends, students and colleagues of Dr. Jean Chamberlain. She was a much admired and well-respected member of the Jackson State University faculty who gave dedicated service in the Department of English and Modern Foreign Languages for many years. Her JSU family will miss Dr. Chamberlain greatly.”

Dr. Mario Azevedo, dean of the College of Liberal Arts, said, “Her passing is one of the saddest moments in the College. Her family can be sure that we are with them in prayer and offer our deepest sympathy.”

Among her professional involvements, Chamberlain had served as secretary-treasurer of the Mississippi Council of Teachers of English and was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English. She began her tenure at Jackson State in 1999.

Family hour will be Sunday, March 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lakeover Funeral Home, 1525 Beasley Road, Jackson.
Funeral services will be Monday, March 16, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 5202 Watkins Dr., Jackson. Condolences may be sent to Dr. Daphne R. Chamberlain, 1706 Fairwood Drive, Jackson, MS 39213.
