Jackson State University has named Dowell Taylor it new director of bands. Taylor, a 1976 alumnus and former member of the Sonic Boom of the South marching band, has served as interim band director since April. The Jackson native holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music education from Jackson State and studied wind conducting at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.
Taylor is familiar with the role. As JSU’s director of bands from 1984 to 1992, he led the Sonic Boom to nationally televised performances at Motown’s 30th Anniversary Celebration and the NBA All-Star Basketball game.
Taylor said he is excited about his future with Jackson State’s bands.
“I have a unique opportunity to continue to develop a group of instrumentalists into a fine marching machine,” said Taylor.
I’m in high school but I want to be a drum major for Jackson State’s sonic boom!!!!!!!!!!!!!|

Surely, you have heard the phrase, ‘some things are better left unsaid.’
However, one is perfectly entitled to express ones viewpoint–even, if tactless.
Congratulations! May God be with you in your well deserved position.
After being gone since 1992. The Command General returns BACK to his rightful position.
Congratulations!!! An excellent choice!!!
Congratulations! The SONIC BOOM OF THE SOUTH IS BACK, period end of story.
Congratulations, Mr. Taylor! I’m sure your students are as proud of you now as I was when you were band director in ’89 when I was in the Boom!
As a current member of the boom, and a third year student in the university i can honestly say that i am glad that Mr. Taylor is the head man in charge, being the fact that he has taught us many ways to be a bandsman and not just participate in the band as a normal student but use his every day techniques to become a mature and better person on and off the band field. BIG SHOUTS OUT TO HIM!!!
Congrats to you Mr. Taylor. This is from your Red head sister in Dallas TX. 🙂 Josh
Congrats Dowell Taylor!
Your comment is exactly why Blacks as a whole show separation. Instead of vilifying the candidates who were not selected for the position, wish them well on their current and future endeavors. Sounds like animosity to me. Not a good look on your behalf.
Congrats to Dowell Taylor on being the head director, I wish you much success in the official position. You do good work.
Mr.Hollinger, your good work will NEVER go unnoticed. Keep up the good work and know that YOUR time is coming. I see “Dr.”Hollinger coming very soon. Doors will continue to open for you, so remain positive and you will have no problem.
Congratulations, Dowell and the JSU Community. Looking forward to the revival of “THE BOOM!” and the development of great young muscians.
Alright, Alright, Alllllriiiiiight! You go learn today! Congrats to DT and the JSU family!!!!

Congrats Mr. Taylor. I’m just glad that Hollinger or that guy from pine bluff didn’t get it. Mr. Taylor is more than qualified for the position. He should’ve gotten in ’09 when Liddell first left.
Congratulations and it is great for JSU.
Congratulations to Dowell Taylor, the Sonic Boom, and the Music Department. This is phenomenal news, and Mr. Taylor is well-deserving of this position. I know he will do us proud. How exciting for the students and the alumni, for this is wonderful news!
Dr. Carolyn W. Meyers, “Thank You”, for giving the “Boom” back to the fans! “The Boom is back in stride again”!
Congrats to my band director!
