(JACKSON, Miss.) – Jackson State University assistant professor of sociology Thomas Kersen will run 50 miles to help raise money for student scholarships and to support the JSU Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology.
A competitive runner since 1997, Kersen, 44, will run the Carl Touchstone Memorial Mississippi Trail 50 on March 3. The annual race takes runners through the Longleaf Horse Trail in the DeSoto National Forest just south of Laurel, Miss. About 100 runners are registered for the 50-mile race.
“Rather than me just running in a competition, I thought it might spark some interest in our department,” Kersen said.
A professor at JSU for three years, Kersen previously taught at the University of North Alabama and a number of other universities and community colleges in Mississippi and Arkansas. His research interests include social capital, the sociology of religion, military sociology and intentional communities. A retired medical officer, Kersen has 22 years of combined service in the U.S. Army, the National Guard and the Army Reserve. He received a Ph.D. in sociology from Mississippi State University.
Kersen, who runs an average of 30 to 40 miles per week, said the secret to long distance running is “putting one foot in front of the other.” He said unlike a regular marathon, making the best time is not his primary goal for the 50-mile run.
“I’ll need to scale back and slow down,” he said. “I’m shooting to finish in 9 or 10 hours.”
Donations to the “50-mile run for JSU” can be made through the Jackson State University Development Foundation. To make a donation, call Constance Lawson at 601-979-2357 or download a pledge form here: www.jsums.edu/announcements/50MileRunforJSU.pdf.

Thank you to everyone who supported me in the 50 mile race. I successfully completed the race (49th place out of a field of 80). The course consisted mainly of mud, rain, and a lot of creeks.
Run Thomas Kersen, Run! My lil’ old target of two miles per day pales in comparison but I am now inspired to do a 10th of what you do. Five miles here I come!
EXCEL WITH THE SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE Dr. Kersen! Good JOB!

Buddy, any mile we put before ourselves is a good mile! I do my best thinking on road.
Thank you for your support–it means a lot to me!
Doc, Stone took the words right out of my mouth. You inspire me to run 5 miles. 45 miles to go. Good luck! Hmmm, would your accomplishment be considered a 50 ‘mile’stone?
The spirit of Forrest lives on?
Thank you for your wonderful comments.
As I learn more from my students, I find that we all have interesting stories. I have had a lot of fun on my journey through life. 🙂
Wow! Thank you, Sociology is my passion–well maybe running too!
Forest Gump is one of my favorite movies! Thank you for your kind words.
Dare I say, “Run Forest, run!” but that is completely awesome Dr. Kersen! Maybe you’ll inspire would-be athletes across JSU!
As a Sociology department alumnus, I must say this is an awesome way to provide the department with the publicity it so needs. Sociology is a dynamic field/department with rewarding career options and positive implications! Glad to see it on the JSU homepage for once.
Goooo, Dr. Kersen!
Thank you for supporting JSU!!! On an unrelated note, you have had a very eventful life. Sounds like such rewarding experiences.
Good luck and good job for what you have already accomplished!! Running 30 to 40 miles a week is a feat in itself.
Run Dr. Kersen, Run!!!
Good Luck!!
