Jackson State University is trumpeting the message that “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” as the university enters a key phase of its historic relationship with neighboring Blackburn Middle School.

JSU’s relationship with Blackburn has existed for years but was strengthened last year when the university agreed to make the middle school a laboratory school. This was designed to offer more ambitious ideas to revolutionize learning and instruction for Blackburn’s faculty and its nearly 450 students.

Dr. Daniel Watkins, dean of the College of Education and Human Development, said the university spent a year creating an enhancement plan for Blackburn.

“Now we are about to implement the plan, which will address academic issues and support Blackburn (in a way) that makes it possible to elevate its academic designation,” Watkins said.

He said he was excited that students were already looking forward to attending JSU.

JSU continues to demonstrate unparalleled support to Blackburn:

  • The Cleopatra D. Thompson Curriculum Center at JSU will serve as a collaborative partner to develop a curriculum and improve technology to deliver the best instructional practices and teacher support to bridge the gap in academic and leadership performances.
  • JSU’s Kids college is another effort that provides summer enrichment opportunities for Blackburn students and instructional hours for pre-service teachers.
