Jackson State University student Sirak M. Mekonen, a physics and computer engineering major, has been accepted into the MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) for the second consecutive year.
“It’s the number one research program in the world. Out of 500 students, there were 40 students selected across the country, and I was one of them,” said Mekonen.
Since 1986, MSRP has been aiming to address the underrepresentation of African Americans, Native Americans, and other ethnic groups in the U.S. in engineering and science fields.
The program seeks to prepare and recruit the most talented students for graduate education. Students accepted into MSRP gain invaluable knowledge in research and innovation from skilled scientists and engineers associated with MIT.
“I’m a curious person and that is the motivation I have right now. I like to know something about everything, because the more you know about people the more you understand,” said Mekonen.
