This week, in observance of Veterans Day on Tuesday, a Jackson State University student military or veteran service member will be highlighted each day for service.
Throughout the year, other service members will also be noted.
Today’s student is:

Laurry Greenfield
From Chicago, Ill.
Age 55
Branch: Navy
Served 22 years, from 1982 to 2010.
Rank: E-6, Petty Officer 1st Class
An urban studies major, he plans to graduate in December, 2015.
Greenfield went to Iraq twice, 1999 and 2000. Served on the Beaulwood, a troop carrier, and on the John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. His last duty station was Meridian Naval Air Station, Meridian, 2010.
Greenfield first came to JSU as a student in 1977, but “partied too much,” he said. “I wasn’t serious about going to school. I was just going because everybody else was going.”
He came back to JSU 2013, he said, because he “promised my mother” that he would graduate.
His favorite activities are working out, football, basketball
Last month, Jackson State University was named a 2015 “Military Friendly” school by Victory Media.
The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and to ensure their success on campus.
There are more than 370 veterans and military students on campus and this number is growing, according to Tim Abram, director of the JSU Veterans and Military Center.
