In recognition of the Tom Joyner Foundation selecting Jackson State University as its School of the Month, we will be highlighting a JSU Hercules Scholar each week.

The Hercules Scholarship is named after radio show host Tom Joyner’s father, the late Hercules Joyner, who was a strong supporter of higher education.
This week’s student is:
Marcus Sidney
Grade Point Average: 3.6
Hometown: Gretna, La.
Major: Earth System Science
Class: Junior
Career Goal: Air Quality Specialist
Comment: After I graduate from college, I hope to obtain a job with an environmental agency as an air quality specialist. In school, I’m currently a member of the NAACP and the Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society. The most influential people in my life are my mom and dad. They have supported me and raised me to be the best person I can be. I’m truly blessed to have been raised with their love and guidance. My motto is: “Have Faith and Never Give Up.” I have been through many obstacles throughout my life so far that have helped to make me into the person I am today. I work hard to triumph over obstacles in my path; however, the largest one I have overcome is cancer. I learned with this experience, that life is not fair or easy. However, I learned that if you work hard and have faith, anything is possible. I’m proud and blessed to be a 12-year brain cancer survivor.
To be a candidate for the scholarship, students must be male, attend a Foundation “School of the Month,” have a grade point average of at least 3.5, and be a campus leader involved in the community with a career goal toward making a difference in the quality of life for his race.
The scholars each receive a scholarship grant of $1,500 that is paid directly to their schools to help offset their college expenses.
February is Black History Month and a great time for alumni, friends and supporters of JSU to show their commitment.
JSU will be promoted on the Tom Joyner Morning Show during the month of February. The Foundation will be accepting donations to help build a better future for JSU.
