Jackson State University art students have curated an exhibit of African art donated to the university that will be shown during an opening party at 1 p.m. April 10 in Ayer Hall at the Margaret Walker Center for the Study of the African-American Experience.
“The Student Art Exhibition, Animated World: African Art from the Anderson Collection at Jackson State University, is organized by JSU Art Department students who are enrolled in the class African Art History,” said Assistant Professor Dr. Yumi Park Huntington.
“In this class, students created 10 different individual groups and then they researched one particular artifact from the Anderson Collection,” she said. From that study, they curated this exhibit for viewing.
The free public exhibition that runs through June 11 highlights three specific themes: Cosmology in African Art, Images of Animals in African Art, and Images of Ancestors in African Art.
The Anderson Collection donors, Mr. James Anderson and Mrs. Beatrice Anderson, will attend the opening, Huntington said.
Associated with the exhibit, a public lecture also will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 24, featuring Nichole Bridges, an associated curator for African, Oceanic and Native American Arts at Saint Louis Art Museum, Huntington said.
