JSU to hold promotion ceremony for Maj. Donald O. Young

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Jackson State University Department of Military Science will hold a promotion ceremony honoring Maj. Donald O. Young to lieutenant colonel at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the JSU Student Center Ballroom B.

Young graduated from Jackson State University in 1991 and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Military Police. His military schooling includes the Military Police Officer Basic Course, the Transportation Officer Advanced Course, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Young has served in a variety of key developmental and staff assignments in the continental United States and overseas.  His first assignment from 1996 to 1999 was in the 87th Division, Transportation Team in Camp Shelby, Miss.  In 1999, he was assigned to the 3D Perscom Command HHC with the Adjutant General HHC. From 2000 to 2002, he assumed command of the 850th Transportation Company in Lyon, Miss.  From 2002 to 2003, he served as the company commander of the 200 Military Police Command in Lakeland, Fla.

In March 2003, Young deployed as the Battalion S4, 733rd Military Police Battalion in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Kuwait and Iraq.  In April 2004, he was assigned to the 3-349th Logistical Support Battalion as the Battalion S4, in 2005, to the Battalion S3 and in 2006, to the Battalion Executive Officer.  In 2007, he accepted an Active Guard Reserve tour and was assigned to the 177th Armored Brigade as chief of operations in the Brigade S3 shop.

Young is currently assigned as the Battalion Executive Officer and the Recruiting Operations Officer at the Jackson State University Department of Military Science “Tiger Battalion.”

Young has a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Jackson State University and a Master of Science degree in criminal justice administration from Columbia Southern University. His awards and decorations include: the Meritorious Service medals, two Joint Service Commendation medals, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and various other service and unit awards.
