Jackson State University recently inducted 23 seniors  into the newly chartered Blue and White Tassel chapter of Mortar Board. It is a senior honor society, but students are inducted at the completion of their junior year, so they can serve for the entirety of the following year.

“This is an effort that started a few years ago,” said Dr. Loria Brown Gordon, associate dean of W.E.B. Dubois Honors College. “We

are always focused on highlighting the success of our students, and it is pivotal that we are able to have such an esteemed honor society added to our campus.”

To be granted a Mortar Board charter, an institution must be accredited, award baccalaureate degrees, have the support of the university administration, host an official visit by a national representative of Mortar Board, and be voted upon by the organization’s board of directors, the National Council.

Additionally, the new chapter agrees to serve as an active honor society that continues to make significant contributions to college and community life.

“Mortar Board is the premier national honor society for college seniors. Those selected for membership have exhibited not just scholastic excellence, but demonstrated exceptional leadership on campus during their college careers,” said Gail Harrison Corvette, national president of Mortar Board, who was initiated into Mortar Board at The Ohio State University in 1980.

She further added that by securing a chapter of Mortar Board, Jackson State University joins other superior institutions that support and honor the contributions of its high-achieving seniors.

“What’s more, the chapter of Mortar Board will serve the campus community in significant ways that add to the quality of campus life – even more important in this challenging time that higher education faces,” Corvette said.

Local Jackson philanthropist and business leader, Janet Griffin Farrington, initiated into Mortar Board at the University of Mississippi, is also a part of the alumni team that is working with this collegiate chapter.
