JSU alumna Guyna Johnson has been announced as board chairman of the Jackson State University Development Foundation. Prior to this role, Johnson served as board vice chair, finance committee chair, investment and real estate committee member.
“As a legacy Jacksonian, I am honored and excited for the opportunity to serve at my alma mater in a capacity that directly impacts the lives of future Jacksonians and provides students a competitive advantage through higher education”, Johnson said.
“We are honored to have Guyna serve as board chairman,” said Jerome Tinker, executive director of JSUDF. “It has been a challenging year for both Jackson State and the Foundation due to the pandemic. We look forward to working collaboratively with Ms. Johnson as we strive to lead the board in generating support that aligns with the mission, vision and future growth of JSU.”
When asked about her graduation date, Johnson said, “Well, I graduated long enough to have just enough seasoning to leverage my professional relationships with alumni and friends of JSU, and just young enough to relate to the evolving educational needs and challenges of the current generation of students.”
The JSUDF was established in 1969 with specific mandates to:
a) Serve as custodian of contributions from the private sector, alumni, friends, corporations and foundations.
b) Receive, invest and administer funds.
c) Act as trustee.
d) Exercise, in general, the powers of a not-for-profit organization under the laws of Mississippi.
“Fifty-two years later, the Foundation has not wavered from its mission, namely to energize existing and new donors to increase financial support for immediate-use scholarships and long-term donation vehicles such as endowments and estate planning gifts — all of which are created by donors to provide perpetual scholarship support for many generations to come,” Johnson said.
The chairman is the principal representative to the public and provides leadership for the BOD in executing their mandate to create policy, provide governance and raise privately donated funds.
Johnson earned a B.S. in Mathematics from JSU and a J.D. from The Ohio State Moritz College of Law. She is a member of the bars for the State of Georgia and District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Johnson is also a Delta Pi initiated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
