(JACKSON, Miss.) – Byron D’Andra Orey, Ph.D., a tenured political science professor at Jackson State University has been elected president of the Southern Political Science Association (SPSA), one of the country’s largest political science organizations.

Being elected president of the (SPSA) is a profound honor that reflects the trust and confidence my peers have placed in me to lead this prestigious organization,” said Orey.

Founded in 1929, the SPSA is one of the oldest political science organizations in the U.S. Its primary purpose consists of promoting research and developing standards of competence amongst professionals in the discipline. The SPSA publishes its “Journal of Politics” with contributing scholars from around the world. It is also known for its annual conference showcasing research in major fields and subfields of political science.

As president, Orey will oversee planning and development of SPSA’s 2026 annual conference in New Orleans, as well as their virtual convening this summer. Other responsibilities will include maintaining the organization’s fiscal health, spearheading initiatives that strengthen the discipline and working collaboratively with other notable organizations to advance the political science sector.

“I hope to enhance our understanding of political phenomena by bringing together scholars with diverse perspectives and methodologies,” Orey said. “While SPSA has its roots in southern politics, it has evolved into a global platform where researchers from around the world gather to discuss topics extending far beyond regional boundaries,” said Orey. “This leadership role will bring significant exposure to Jackson State University, and enrich our students’ understanding of political science.”

SPSA promotes the advancement of political science fields and subfields, including American politics, comparative politics, formal theory, international relations, methodology, political theory, public administration and public policy.

Orey first joined SPSA as a graduate student 30 years ago. Throughout his membership, he served two terms on the executive committee and has held various leadership roles at its annual conferences.

In addition to his new role, Orey is preparing to release “Mississippi, Conflict and Change: A New Edition” an updated version of the classic 1974 book written by acclaimed author James W. Loewen. The revised edition, set for release in August 2025, will provide new insights into the state’s contemporary politics, culture and the economy, bringing the history of the state up to date.
