Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi will honor Dr. Ebony Lumumba, associate professor of English at Jackson State University, and four other leaders at the Women of Distinction event.
“I was, honestly, humbled and shocked to learn that I had been selected for this honor,” said Lumumba, who is also the chair of the department of English, Modern Foreign Languages, and Speech.
“An organization with as much history and notoriety as the Girl Scouts could have chosen any number of women to acknowledge. The fact that I am in the number this year is truly moving.”
This fundraiser supports the many activities enjoyed by 8,000 Girl Scouts across 45 counties in central and south Mississippi, more specifically InSchool Girl Scouts.
“This honor is a reminder of the responsibility that I have to be a positive example for other women and girls,” Lumumba said. “I don’t take lightly the opportunity to represent my community and other women with similar identity intersections. I hope I make them proud.”
The Women of Distinction event will be held at the Westin Hotel in downtown Jackson on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m. A reception featuring a silent auction and live music by Kerry Thomas begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available starting at $125 per person, with a “Friend of the Girl Scouts” sponsorship available for $500 for a pair. Corporate sponsorships begin at the bronze level for $1,500.
