Men’s cross country, women’s tennis teams post perfect NCAA APR scores

JSU Block-JSU-LogoJackson State University’s Division of Athletics continues to make strides academically, receiving recognition from the NCAA for perfect APR (Academic Progress Rates) scores in men’s cross country and women’s tennis.

According to the most recent NCAA APR report released in April, 16 JSU sports teams met or exceeded NCAA standards.

For the fourth straight year JSU had no teams placed in the NCAA penalty structure and all Tigers teams are eligible for post-season play. To compete in the 2016-17 postseason, teams must achieve either a 930 multi-year APR score or an average of 940 over the most recent two years.

Jackson State is one of only two teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) to have two teams receive NCAA public recognition for perfect APR scores of 1000. The Tigers are also only one of two teams in the state of Mississippi to have multiple sport teams to post perfect APR scores.

The Tigers football team posted a 967, which was the highest score in the SWAC. The baseball team (978), men’s cross country (1000), men’s track (992), and women’s basketball (982), women’s tennis (1000) and women’s track (992) also led the league in APR.

Other JSU APR scores are as follows: men’s basketball (955), men’s golf (991), men’s tennis (981), softball (968), bowling (982), women’s cross country (977), soccer (966), volleyball (967) and women’s golf (919). The women’s golf team posted a single year APR of 944.

JSU posted six single year scores of 1000 (men’s cross country, men’s tennis, men’s track, bowling, soccer and women’s tennis).

Now in its 13th year, the Academic Progress Rate measures the eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. It also serves as a predictor of graduation success. The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors set cut scores of 930 (out of 1,000) as a threshold for teams to meet or face possible immediate and historical sanctions. An APR of 930 translates to approximately a 50 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR).
