Mississippi Academy of Science awards JSU professor Outstanding Scientific Division Chair

JSU chemistry and biochemistry professor Md. Alamgir Hossain

(JACKSON, Miss.) – The Mississippi Academy of Science awarded Jackson State University associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry Md. Alamgir Hossain the Outstanding Scientific Division Chair during its annual symposium February 23-24 in Hattiesburg.

Hossain served as the chair of the academy’s Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 2011-2012 and organized the divisional symposium for the academy’s annual meeting. Under his leadership, the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering arranged six plenary sessions with invited speakers, two student oral sessions and two general poster sessions. Hossain also organized a National Science Foundation CAREER awardees’ symposium covering all current NSF CAREER awardees in chemistry in the state.

This year, the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering received 105 abstracts among 375 abstracts from all 13 MAS divisions. In addition, Hossain served as the chair of the overall poster sessions of the MAS.

Hossain has been a faculty member at Jackson State University since 2005. He is currently leading a research group consisting of eight graduate and two undergraduate students and one postdoctoral researcher. His research includes supramolecular and macromolecular chemistry and developing new sensors for anions of environmental and biological relevance. He has published more than 60 research articles, several review articles and two book chapters.

Hossain is the recipient of the prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation in 2011. He is also the JSU HEADWAE awardee for 2012.
